Dr. Raymond Wedderburn is the Chief of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care, as well as Associate Director of the Surgical Residency Program at Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West. He is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Dr. Wedderburn attended Calabar All Age School and Wolmer’s Boys’ School prior to immigrating to the US. He attended New Rochelle High School and then obtained his undergraduate degree from Brown University. He subsequently earned his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College (Weill Cornell).

Dr. Wedderburn completed his general surgery residency at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, after which he remained on staff as a general surgery attending for one year at the Roosevelt Hospital. In collaboration with Dr. David Finley, Director of the Intensive Care Unit, he established the first Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) service at Roosevelt Hospital. Recognizing the need for more formal training and mentorship, he opted to do a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care. Under the tutelage of Dr. Joseph Civetta, Dr. Wedderburn completed a Surgical Critical Care fellowship at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital/Ryder Trauma Center. Dr. Wedderburn then returned to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt as an attending surgeon and surgical intensivist, and has remained at the same institution for his entire career.

Dr. Wedderburn’s career has focused on providing excellent bedside care, while educating the next generation of surgeons. He has been recognized by his peers leading to inclusion in Castle Connolly Top Doctors guide for 20 consecutive years. Dr. Wedderburn has also been the recipient of the Residents’ Award for Excellence in Teaching on multiple occasions. Throughout his career, he has also been committed to volunteerism, participating in over 20 humanitarian medical missions to the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and Asia.
